It has been said that Lady in Satin was Billie Holiday’s favorite album – an opinion that wasn’t shared by her most fervent admirers when it first appeared. Haunted by love and death, the LP was recorded in February of 1958, 17 months before her death at the age of 44. Over half a century later, it is necessary for us to face the facts:
these interpretations of songs steeped in lush strings and populated by women with broken hearts –broken as Billie’s own voice was broken (though still sublime nonetheless) – showcase the singer at her most poignant and luminous.
Every track is performed in an inimitable and extraordinary way, and the tragic mood never falls into the pathetic.
From “I’m a Fool to Want You” to “Violets for Your Furs”, not to mention “You’ve Changed” and “You Don’t Know What Love Is”, emotion is never feigned. Even today she continues to influence the style of innumerable singers and instrumentalists, both male and female. What’s the secret? Just the fact that Billie Holiday simply invented a way of singing: a language.
