In 1984, the biggest British artists of that time came together, at the initiative of Bob Geldof, to record a Christmas single in aid of the famine in Africa. Artists such as Bono, George Michael, Phil Collins, Duran Duran, Paul Weller, Culture Club, Spandau Ballet and many others recorded a song entitled ‘Do They Know It’s Christmas’.

The song reached number one in 15 countries and became a Christmas classic. Later, two more versions were recorded, in 2004 for the song’s 20th anniversary, with Natasha Bedingfield, Sugababes, Keane, Robbie Williams, Joss Stone and Radiohead, among others. The third version was released in 2014, featuring Paloma Faith, Ellie Goulding, One Direction, Sam Smith and Ed Sheeran.

For the 40th anniversary of ‘Do They Know It’s Christmas’ there is now a 12″ and CD single containing all three versions, plus the live version as played at Live Aid 1985 and a special version containing all three versions. merged, so that the artists from all versions are, as it were, in duet with each other.
