Hal Wilner was known for producing beautiful tribute albums, but was also a very good friend of Lou Reed. The last album Wilner worked on before his death from the consequences of Covid-19 was therefore this tribute to the debut of Lou’s band, the legendary Velvet Underground, of course expanded with singer Nico for that occasion. The impact of that 1967 album cannot be overestimated and so there was enough enthusiasm to make something beautiful out of it. Michael Stipe opens with a beautifully orchestrated Sunday Morning, immediately followed by an exciting Waiting For My Man by The National’s Matt Berninger. After that, Kurt Vile, Courtney Barnett, St. Vincent and even veteran Iggy Pop, in combination with Matt Sweeney, among others, show that this album is a succession of classics, whose influence is enormous to this day.
